This week's affirmation: I look forward and make my choices based on my future, not on my past.
We've all done things in our life that we regret or aren't proud of. Sometimes these choices weigh heavily on us and end up defining the choices we make from that point on. Don't be crippled by one unsound decision. Remember it is only a floor and use it as a foundation to make better choices.

#320: It's Been Done Before (Friday, February 15)
This week's affirmation: "I believe in my talents, abilities and potential. Even if something has been done before, it hasn't been done by me. I make the difference."
I was watching a story about Jack Andraka the (now) 16-year-old who developed a cheaper, more accurate test for diagnosing pancreatic cancer. It said that before he became a household name, he'd contacted nearly 200 scientists asking for lab space before he found one that said yes. Two hundred.
Imagine if he'd stopped after the 15th rejection. Or the 73rd. Or the 148th. There are plenty of inventions and services we use today that are improvements of existing things. Imagine if we'd stopped after the first iteration of the computer, or the cell phone, or the ATM. There would probably be no internet, no Skype or any of the modern technologies that make our lives simpler.
The moral: Don't be discouraged by someone telling you it's been done before. You can always put your own stamp on things.

#319: Chase Vampire (Friday, February 8)
This week's affirmation: "I will not allow negativity to get inside me."
They complain all the time. Their glasses are always empty. When asked to describe a situation, they focus on the bad. Nothing works in their favor.
I call them vampires, people who suck the energy out of you with their negativity. It's so easy to get pulled in--resist the urge. Try to counteract negative statements with positive ones. Focus on the things that are going right. But if all else fails, remove yourself from (or limit your exposure to) those situations. It's dangerous for your health and development.
"...dem wi suck out yuh blood and mek yuh get mawga,
An' dem come in all form like mosquita..." - Sancho, Chase Vampire

#318: Keep Calm and Carry On (Friday, February 1)
This week's affirmation: I try to find the lesson, the message or the opportunity in every crisis or challenge that confronts me.
I only learned the history of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" slogan last year. As a writer and marketer, one of the first things I wanted to know was who came up with it. I think it's a great message; it takes creativity and imagination to craft an uplifting message during a time of turmoil and stress.
When morale around you is low, and everyone is depressed and fearful it's really hard to "keep calm". But even this message (which was never even supposed to see the light of day yet is here 70+ years later) is a testament to fortitude.
As Jamaicans say, "The darkes' part a di night a before day light." (The darkest part of the night is right before daylight.), so til then, keep calm and carry on. There are brighter days ahead.
